Dependable Systems: Fault Compensation and Self Repair
Problems, Methods and Limitations

Abstract:
Embedded systems are more and more used in safety-critical applications. New tasks such as automotive driver assistance systems tend to require ICs and SoCs fabricated in high-end technologies for performance reasons. However, such technologies are inherently subject to new fault mechanisms resulting in trasient and permanent faults.

Fault-tolerant computing based on duplication, triplication and coding is heavily used in certain applications, but will not solve all problems. In particular, multiple transient faults and permanent faults due to wear-out effects are becoming a challenge.

The tutorial has a focus on specific technologies for the detection and on-line compensation first. The second part then gives an introduction to possibilities and limitations of built-in self repair (BISR) strategies with a focus on logic BISR.


Bio:
Heinrich Theodor Vierhaus received a diploma in Electrical Engineering from Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany, in 1975. From 1975-1977 he was a lecturer at Dar-es-Salaam Technical College in Tanzania. From 1978 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the University of Siegen in Germany, where he received a doctoral degree in EE in 1983. From 1983-1996 he was a senior researcher with GMD, the German National Research Institute for Information Technology, where he was the acting director of the System Design Technology Institute (SET) from 1993-1996. Since 1996 he has been a full professor for computer engineering at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 technical papers in the area of IC design and test technology.
